Evan Johns is Here!

Big Cypress Records is proud to announce the release of new music by American rock n' roll legend Evan Johns.

As leader of the incendiary Evan Johns & The H-Bombs, this mind-blowing guitarist, singer and songwriter blazed across the 80's with a raw roots sound that was absolutely authentic while being punk as hell, essentially spawning all things "pyschobilly." He has since appeared on over 50 albums, recording with everyone from Timbuk 3 to cult figure Eugene Chadbourne to neo-country chantuese Neko Case. Sidelined briefly by cataracts in the 90's, Johns continued to write and record, including releasing his only live album, 1995's Burnin' Down The Barn (available for purchase online exclusively from Big Cypress).

Moontan, a 12 song romp featuring LA instrumental band Hillbilly Soul Surfers, represents Evan Johns' first new studio recording to be released in almost a decade. It's a rootenanny of riotous twang and jocular plaints that not only reaffirms Evan Johns' legendary status as an edge-walking guitar mangler, but also as a nimble tunesmith with a voice unlike any other. An elite gang of roots rockers, funkateers and jazzbos choose for the nexus of their confederation a swamp in southern Florida…and Big Cypress Records is born!

More agenda than brand, Big Cypress represents a host of independent artists and labels whose tenuous connection is less one of style than it is attitude. These folks entertain their public by entertaining themselves, making music for its own sake as much as for getting paid, cutting tracks along the way as they may. Some are bonafide stars, others are complete unknowns, all rock with a most sublime roll!

Emblematic of Big Cypress Records is guitarist/singer Raiford Starke. Not only was his debut CD Speak Me actually recorded in the Big Cypress Swamp (on the Seminole Indian Reservation, where he was seen jamming onstage with Phish during their historic millennium concert there), but Raiford's distinctive picking is also featured on several other discs available for sale from Big Cypress. It was Starke who sought out personal hero Evan Johns and coaxed the legendary rock and roll wild man down to Florida and into the arms of Big Cypress Records. Wherever Raiford is, hot music happens!
